Wall Tiles: For walls, backsplashes, and even counters

Step 1: Surface Preparation – A Solid Foundation

Embarking on your inaugural tile venture demands commendation. Beyond the quest for the perfect tile, precise sizing is imperative. Tiles grace most sound substrates if clean, smooth, dry, and free of wax, soap scum, or grease. Repair damaged, loose, or uneven areas. Remove hindrances like moldings, trim, and appliances. Optionally, undercut door jambs for seamless tile placement.

Step 2: Wall Layout – Crafting Symmetry

Locate the wall’s center using a level and draw a plumb line. Lay loose tiles across the bottom, starting from the center line, ensuring uniform joints. Adjust the center line if it results in cuts smaller than half a tile. Identify the lowest point on the floor or tub, stack two tiles, and draw a horizontal line at the top. Extend this line around all walls to be tiled, serving as a guideline for the first row.

Step 3: Applying Adhesive – The Bonding Ritual

Choose a suitable adhesive, adhering meticulously to instructions. Mix an amount usable within 30 minutes. Spread a 1/4″ coat on one grid area using the recommended trowel. Avoid covering guidelines. Comb adhesive into ridges with the notched side at a 45-degree angle. Remove excess, leaving a uniform, ridged setting bed. Don’t spread an area larger than can be set in 15 minutes.

Step 4: Cutting Tile – Precision Crafting

Measure and mark tiles carefully. Employ a tile cutter for straight or diagonal cuts, a nipper for curved cuts, and a rod saw for full-length curved cuts. Smooth sharp-cut edges with a carborundum stone. Equip yourself with gloves and goggles for hand and eye protection during the cutting process. Measure, mark, and create space for expansion, ideally no less than 2 inches.

Step 5: Setting Tile – Building Symmetry

Shades vary in ceramic tiles; mix tiles from different cartons for a blended effect. Start installing tiles in the room’s center, one grid at a time. Set tiles with a slight twisting motion, avoiding sliding. Insert tile spacers or leave equal joints. Finish each grid before progressing. Tap in tiles with a rubber mallet to ensure a good bond. Remove excess adhesive from joints with a putty knife and from tiles with a damp sponge.

Step 6: Grouting Joints – The Culmination

Wait approximately 24 hours before grouting. Follow grout package instructions diligently. Make enough for 30 minutes of use. Remove tile spacers and spread grout, forcing it into joints with a rubber grout float. Tilt the float at a 45-degree angle, removing excess grout immediately. After 15-20 minutes, use a damp sponge to clean grout residue and smooth joints. Allow grout to harden, polish with a soft cloth after 72 hours, and refrain from applying sealers or polishes for three weeks. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations thereafter.
